Objectif
Europe on Way concerns the development of a multilingual travel information service for the European market of tourist and travel organizations. The distinguishing features of the service are: a) it is based on a very high quality road network database with pan-European coverage. The database is owned by Navigation Technologies B.V. b) the service is available on line via Internet c) the service offers different geographic data processing possibilities d) the service will be developed and marketed by organizations with notable reputation in the transportation and tourist area It is generally recognized that the growth of pan-European applications is severely limited by the availability of European wide quality data and by the different national approaches and standards. The most significant pan-European data sets are the road network databases for auto navigation and truck routing. One of the leading companies in Europe in the production of such databases is Navigation Technologies. Automotive is the primary application area of the Navigation Technologies database, nevertheless the characteristics of completeness, accuracy and detail of the data set makes the navigable geographic database the optimum basis for a wider range of applications. The main goal of Europe on Way is to capitalize on the Navigation Technologies database by offering spatial data processing services in the niche market of tourist and travel agencies. The business challenge is to provide low cost access to high quality and pan-European spatial information through Internet. The project Consortium has the marketing and technical skills to pursue the ambitious goal: ELDA Ingegneria - I (project coordinator) has a consolidated experience in the development of geographical applications for road management and is VAR of Navigation Technologies in Italy; the competence of the partner SEIS Net - I, operating as Internet provider in Italy, will complement the technical expertise of ELDA Ingegneria ; Navigation Technologies - NL will provide the European database and will contribute to the technical assessment; Automobile Association - UK will contribute to the service specification and to the promotion and marketing of the service in Europe.
