Objectif
In order to enhance the value of their extraordinary diversity, the areas targeted in the Info2000 programme through the project MAGIC-TOUR concern cultural heritage, the environment and European Geographic Information. The main objective of this project, thanks to multimedia products (e.g. Internet/CDROM/CDI) and georeferencing information technologies (e.g. Geographical Information Systems), is to make existing data in Europe in several domains (notably cultural and environmental) available to end users. In order to achieve this goal the project aims more specifically at: - making data available from existing data bases by helping data producers to provide the former, according to classification and a defined format (Metadata norms). - Selecting information to match each of the themes enabling the end user to easily understand and identify the necessary data for an effective use. - Georeferencing this multimedia data (sound, images, text) in order to build interactive geodirectories relating to culture and to the environment, associated with territories managed by Spatial Information Systems which implement GISs (Geographic Information Systems). - Allowing those who are not able to travel in reality, to do so "virtually". - enabling access to these services via Internet or by the use of CDROMS or CDIs. - Assisting in the preparation of thematic tours through a user friendly end user interface, using itinerary calculation fonctionalities of the Spatial Information System (SIS). MAGIC-TOUR is a concept implementing a methodology which allows one to define Metadata and to georeference it in fields of interest thus offering the user intuitive queries in an informed territory. Europe has a great quantity of data split up among a lot of information providers using different tools and formats which are not very compatible with mass marketing. The project will develop the technical rules necessary for the research and modelling and georeferencing of this data in order to enable its commercial distribution. After a preliminary definition phase this project will reach an operational and commercial phase through two themes used as prototypes. These two themes will exploit data related to European cultural heritage and natural resources. - "Natural parks", highlighting the specific resources at different sites, discovery of nature, fauna and flora. This aspect will be dealt with, with the support of the French Ministry of Environment. - Art, Culture and traditions of the Celtic people in Europe", discovery of testimonies of the Celt heritage, what they cover ,where they are found and how to prepare a tour. This aspect will be dealt with the support of the University of Limerick in Ireland.
