The SQUID readout system for imaging array of ultrasensitive superconducting sensors

Ziel

The main objective of this project is to design, study and produce the universal SQUID read-out system of planned sensitivity better than 50 fA/Hz1/2 for ultrasensitive imaging arrays of superconducting sensors.
In general, for space astronomy the required sensitivity of the sensor is 10-18 W/Hz1/2 for number of elements of about 100 at submillimeter wavelengths. In the final stage of this project the integration of developed universal SQUID read-out system with 8-element low-temperature (about 0.1 K) antenna-coupled nanobolometer array will be made.

Research activities will be tended in various directions including the following parts:

The technological part - design of special SQUIDs and SQUID-gradiometers which are capable of operating with required sensitivity in low-temperature range (0.1 K) with high source resistance (1 - 10kOhm);
The electronics part - development of a simple non-modulation wide band SQUID electronics based on helium-temperature cooled preamplifier or SQUID preamplifier; acquisition system and computer control electronics;
Software part - development of programs for automatic system operation;
Methodological part - development techniques for quantitative measurements of signals from nano-size SIN tunnel junctions with normal resistance of about 10kOhm.

The following results will be obtained:

- the special thin-film SQUIDs providing the required sensitivity when operating with high-resistive signal source;
- specific dc SQUID electronics;
- technique of precise electrical measurements;
- the first experimental data.
