New biotechnologies for production of food grade lactic acid from raw starchy materials

Objective

The Project aimed to develop and evaluate the biotechnological potential of lactic acid production from raw starch directly; passing its precooking and hydrolysis what will permit an efficient utilization of agricultural wastes and use of waste less technology. The efficient amylolytic microbial strains should be obtained, including by gene engineering, studied and characterized. Various starchy materials, amylolytic enzyme complexes of the producers and fermentation kinetics will be studied to establish fermentation of lactic acid. For the continuous production of lactic acid the immobilized microbial cells and membrane technologies will be investigated. Based on the efficient method for lactic acid production planning to prepare and to test new lactate derivatives, particularly biodegradable polymers.

The distinct objectives of the Project include:
- Screening and comparative study of lactic acid production by amylolytic lactobacteria and acidophilic spore -forming bacteria;
- Evaluation of efficient continuous production of lactic acid from raw starchy materials with application of immobilized cells and membrane technology;
- Obtaining of the lactate derivatives and biodegradable polymers of lactic acid;
- Development of microbiological methods for obtaining of the lactate-based polymers and study of their biodegradability;
Planning to create the Culture Collection with database of amylolytic the selected perspective strains producing lactic acid, their derivatives and polymers.
