Objectif In the central Siberian forests, current forest management practices consist of large-scale, highly mechanised clearcutting operations which cause severe damage to the forest ecosystems. In order to change to an integrated resource management of these forest ecosystems, this project will investigate the basic functions of the forest ecosystems of a Siberian watershed, and develop and implement a community-based ecologically sustainable management plan for it. Ecological zoning of the forest sites of the watershed will be the basis of the management plan. Alternative silviculture systems such as partial cut systems based on natural regeneration and corresponding gentle harvesting systems will be tried out and assessed from the ecological and economical point of view. The harvesting methods employed will be labour intensive and so fulfil the goal of maximising employment, which is also of particular importance. The specific results of this project will be to provide scientific knowledge on the possible use of partial cut natural regeneration-based silviculture systems and on the economic parameters of ecologically sustainable forest management in central Siberia. It is expected that the project will generate human development, economic and environmental benefits to: facilitate the professional development of scientists and managers in Siberia in the natural resources management field; assist in the development of sustainable multi-resources management of the Siberian forest-dominated landscape in concert with community and human development needs; and contribute to the maintenance and/or restoration of functional integrity of a global and threatened resource.
