The method of alternative forestry organization on the basis of drainage basin was used for the first time in Russia. The object for investigation was the Murma River Watershed (60 000 ha), which is situated in the south taiga subzone. Over the project period a database for the territory was formed, ecological zoning was carried out and the map of ecological zones was compiled (scale 1:15 000), the following zones were singled out: - protective areas along the Murma River and its tributaries; - swamped areas; - steep slopes; - felled areas; - old age native forests; - industrial zone; - Siberian pine stands. For each ecological zone a management system was elaborated, the priority was forest ecological functions. Simultaneously, a series of maps (forest map, forest type map, soil map, logging map, forest regeneration map) was compiled for the watershed territory using original methodologies. Alternative forest use will be planned on their basis. These maps were used in the determination of ecological, biological and forestry parameters for each forest ecosystem, in planning and allocation of different forest use types taking into consideration preservation of ecological (hydrological inclusive) stability of the whole watershed ecosystem. A study on the forest village population's social structure, the employment, and the employment possibilities was performed. An analysis of life and work conditions was done.
