Objective
The principal aim of the project is to investigate theoretically, experimentally and by means of numerical simulation, the fundamental mechanisms of water wave non-linear dynamics and wave-shear flow interactions, focusing mainly on those physical processes and phenomena which are considered to be the most important in the context of wind wave dynamics.
The project will unite the complementary efforts of the listed research groups and to focus on the following specific key issues: the role of wind induced shear currents in wind wave dynamics; the generation, dynamics and role of vorticity in wave field evolution; mechanisms of wave generation by wind; three-dimensional aspects of non-linear wave dynamics; and wave transformation in non-uniform shear currents such as wave groups, three-dimensional aspects and near-shore dynamics.
The expected results will clarify the fundamental mechanisms of wave and wave-shear flow interactions and their role in ocean dynamics. These results could be applied to the development of models of atmosphere-ocean interaction, wind-wave dynamics, models of the sea-surface for the needs of remote sensing and to different aspects of coastal zone dynamics.
