Holography applied to protection, preservation and non-destructive evaluation of cultural heritage

Objetivo



In recent decades all around the world great attention has been paid to the study of cultural heritage and preservation. As a result, the achievements of natural sciences are finding their place in museum life. Physical and chemical analysis, as well as UV, IR and x-ray techniques are applied to the study, identification and restoration of museum items. Nuclear and spectrometry methods are used to date items.

Holography offers extraordinary potential applications in the domain of cultural heritage. Two main trends exist. One is that of display holography, where holograms are used as a means of visual information representation, for example, to exhibit optical copies of museum items. The second direction is connected with technical applications of holography and can be used to solve problems related to the study, conservation and restoration of museum items, e.g. by checking the present state of integrity of objects and locating and characterising deterioration before it becomes critical.

In order to protect, preserve and assure the non-destructive evaluation of the cultural heritage, the project will us pulsed Ruby and diode lasers; transform sequentially recorded video to multiplex video-holography; manufacture portable equipment; develop light-sensitive emulsions for very high sensitivity and for multiple colour reading.
