Non-linear optical phenomena in thin magnetic film structures

Objective

The aim of this project is to promote strong co-operation between NIS research teams from Russia and Ukraine and of France, The Netherlands and Germany on a very new subject in solid state physics.

The Dutch and Russian groups are experimental experts in non-linear optics in magnetic materials while the French are investigating for some time the magnetism of magnetic thin film structures using sophisticated magneto-optical and imaging techniques. From the theoretical side the Ukranian and German groups have already done pioneering work in optical second harmonic generation (SHG) and associated magneto-optics in magnetic materials.

The project focuses on the study of the magnetism of sharp interfaces in these thin film structures by means of magneto-optics on SHG, which are specifically sensitive to the local breaking of symmetry. This is an important challenge since little information has been available on the structure and magnetism of buried interfaces which play a major role on all new recently discovered effects such as giant magnetoresistance, oscillatory exchange interaction between ferromagnetic layers, and enhanced magneto-optical effects. A new magneto-optical imaging technique on SHG will be developed to visualize only the interface magnetic domain structure. A corresponding theory will be developed.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
