Pharmacological, electrophysiological and biophysical properties of vascular smooth muscle cells in hypertension.

Objetivo

It is well recognized that hypertension is associated with important remodelling of the vascular system. The pharmacological and physiological properties of vessels also change with hypertension, yet previous studies of changing vascular responsiveness with hypertension have been characterized by conflicting results. Recent advances in cell signalling have shown that factors which modulate vascular tone (neurotransmitters, hormones, stretch), and growth factors utilise similar intracellular calcium messengers and mechanisms.

The main goal of this project is, therefore, to study the influence of hypertension on smooth muscle cell calcium handling, and to throw light on the mechanisms involved in the development and the maintenance of hypertension. Pharmacological, electrophysiological and biochemical approaches will be combined for studying calcium handling, according to the resources and interests of each team. The aim is to establish normalised conditions for studying the change in the responsiveness and the properties of vessels in hypertensive disease.
