Difference and functional-differential equations, special functions and self-structuring phenomena

Objective



The purpose of the proposed project is to investigate functional- differential and difference equations with rescaling and to pursue a wide range of their applications in pure mathematics, scientific computation and mathematical physics.
The fundamental role of functional equations with rescaling is being increasingly recognised by the mathematical community. In the last decade there is an enormous interest in a range of mathematical phenomena that can be best described by considering in unison a number (usually infinity) of nested temporal or spatial scales. Examples are self-similarity and fractal structure in dynamical systems, wavelets in approximation theory, turbulent flow in fluid mechanics, renormalisation groups and quantum algebras in mathe- matical physics, division algorithms in computer-aided geometric design, multiresolution, multigrid and divide-and-conquer techniques in numerical analysis. Functional-differential and difference equations are a powerful mathematical tool to analyse such phenomena. Therefore, any progress in their understanding, whether on the conceptual, dynamical or numerical level, is bound to lead to rapid and potentially significant applications. The pursuance of these applications is the main goal of this project. Specific objectives include:
the theory of Askey-Wilson polynomials, mainly with a rescaling parameter
which is a root of unity;
general orthogonal polynomials, in particular in connection with
transformations of the underlying weight function;
wavelets, their bases and dilation equations, in particular in a
multivariate setting;
self-similar spectra of Schroedinger operators;
self-structuring phenomena, the onset of chaos and turbulence. Different groups share different expertise in mathematical analysis, nonlinear dynamical systems, numerical analysis, mathematical physics and fluid mechanics. This is essential to the success of the programme, because of its interdisciplinary character. The research will be pursued by different combinations of participants. so that their expertise can be combined in a synergistic manner.
The outcome of the project will be both a much better understanding of differential-functional and difference equations as mathematical constructs and a range of exciting applications in different areas of scholarship.
