Liquid Crystals with Unusual Magnetic Properties

Objective

The creation of novel liquid crystals (metallomesogens) having an unusually large magnetic anisotropy (100 times greater than the magnetic anisotropy already known in liquid crystal compounds). Such materials will serve in practical applications (easy magnetically switchable liquid crystals) and will create a material base for the powerful development of liquid crystals magento-optics.
The creation of mesogenic (i.e. liquid-crystal-like) complexes with variable magnetic properties (i.e. low spin-high spin transitions). The structure determination of the new complexes outlined above and the identification of the liquid crystalline phases formed from them. The measurement of the magnetic, optical and electrooptical properties of new compounds with a view to their application as sensors and electro- or magneto-active electronic components.
To create a deeper understanding of the relationship between the magnetic properties of individual mesogenic complex and the magnetic properties of the mesophase as a whole. In the first and second years, a strong synthetic programme will be initiated in both Exeter and Kazan (I), while complementary magnetic measurements will be the task of groups in Darmstadt and Kazan (I). Kazan (I) will also be responsible for the EPR and magnetic birefringence studies and Kazan (II) will be responsible for NMR studies. Following initial mesophase characterization by teams in Exeter and Kazan (I), structural studies will be responsible of the Strasbourg group who will carry out both X-ray and EXAFS experiments on mesophase, while the Kiev group will study single crystals by X-ray methods. The expected results of this work are: a) The creation of lanthanide containing liquid crystals, easily switchable in a magnetic field, and mesogenic complexes with spin-equilibrium properties. b) The determination of the structrure and liquid-crystalline, magnetic and electrooptical properties of the new compounds.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
