Real-Time Multiscale Composite System for Structural Health Monitoring of Fatigue Damage

Objective

The project aims at developing a “multiscale smart skin” sensor able to measure cumulated fatigue damage of aircraft structures in real-time using various embedded techniques. The research activities shall be carried out by three institutes, IzfP (Institute of Non-Destructive Testing, Dresden, Germany), IMP (Institute of Metal Physics, Kiev, Ukraine) and ISPMS (Institute of Strength and Problems in Material Science, Tomsk, Russia) under the supervision and coordination of Airbus (Bristol, UK). IMP shall deal with the lower layer of the sensor, made of soft Al single crystalline material, providing information about both special and angular distribution of the structural fatigue damage.
IzfP and ISPMS shall focus on sensor intermediate polymer layer and multiscale terminal for data acquisition by embedded or onboard computer systems of aircraft. To compare the results provided by the sensor, ISPMS shall use novel tools to measure characteristic fatigue parameters for further qualifying the sensor.
Airbus UK shall provide the requirement for sensor evaluation on aircraft, as well as the project management and coordination. The project shall provide the optimized composition for the “multiscale smart skin” components, the criteria for the most appropriate method of data acquisition as well as the detailed descriptions of the requirements in using the “multiscale smart skin”. The information from the “multiscale smart skin” response of the actual unpredictable fatigue damage shall also be discussed, along with the optimal approach for real-time monitoring and adaptation of the data acquisition methods to the available interface and standards. Furthermore, the project shall supply the criteria and estimations of reliability and statistical robustness of the health monitoring technique along with the preparation to its practical implementation. Finally, the project shall provide a series of report for INTAS as well as dissemination and exploitation packages.
