Objective
The objectives of the project are: a) the preparation for publication of a critical edition (in columns) of the four recensions of the Old Georgian version of St. Matthew's and Mark's Gospels; b) the preparation for publication (in a separate column) of the readings of the complete lectionaries and lectionary fragments and fragments of Gospel manuscripts; c) a scholarly investigation into the history of the Gospels in Old Georgian; d) the compilation of a complete catalogue of the manuscripts containing the Old Georgian version of the Gospels and lectionaries (about 300 manuscripts); e) a translation into English of the catalogue and the scholarly investigation; f) the preparation of a transcription and an interlinear translation of the texts and the main variants of the critical edition of St. Matthew's and Mark's Gospels into English (in columns); g) the preparation of both printed and online editions of the critical text and the catalogue. The expected results of the project will consist in a complete edition of the Georgian versions of the two Gospels and a complete catalogue of the manuscripts containing the Old Georgian versions of the Gospels and the evangeliary readings from lectionaries. The results will be published both in printed form and in online versions consisting of the following parts: a) Catalogue of the Manuscripts Containing the Old Georgian Version of the Gospels (in Georgian and English); b) The Old Georgian Version of St. Matthew's Gospel: Critical text of the four recensions of the Old Georgian version of St. Matthew's Gospel (arranged in separate columns), with lectionary readings of St. Matthew's Gospel added in a separate column, together with a scholarly investigation of the Old Georgian text variants (in Georgian and English); c) The Old Georgian Version of St. Mark's Gospel: Critical text of the four recensions of the Old Georgian version of St. Mark's Gospel (arranged in separate columns), with lectionary readings of St. Mark's Gospel added in a separate column, together with a scholarly investigation of the Old Georgian text variants (in Georgian and English); d) The Old Georgian Versions of St. Matthew's and St. Mark's Gospels: The Old Georgian critical text with an interlinear translation into English and a transcription. The critical texts of St. Matthew's and St. Mark's Gospels together with variant readings, a transcription and an interlinear translation into English will also be published online. The investigations will bring important new insights into the history of the translation of biblical texts into Old Georgian, thus supporting all kinds of investigations into the early dissemination of the Gospels in the East. The publication of the critical text of the Gospels together with the evangelical readings of the lectionaries and the catalogue of manuscripts containing Gospel texts or readings will be the first attempt to provide a complete overview of the evangelical tradition preserved in Old Georgian.
