Dynamic Radio for IP-Services in Vehicular Environments

Objective

The DRIVE project addresses the convergence of cellular and broadcast networks to lay the foundation for cost-efficient provision of IP-based in-vehicular multimedia services for information, education, training, and entertainment. The project approach to increase the total spectrum efficiency is to optimise the inter-working of different radio networks (GSM, GPRS, UMTS, DAB, DVB-T) in a common dynamically allocated frequency range and to enhance the co-operation between network elements and applications n an adaptive manner. The required key competence is covered by a consortium of leading telecommunication manufacturers, broadcast operators, cellular network operators, multimedia content providers, the car industry, and R&D organisations.

Objectives:
The citizens' expectation for cost efficient provision of existing and emerging mobile multimedia services for information, education, training, and entertainment is faced with the reality of scarce radio resources. The overall objectives of the DRiVE project are to enable spectrum-efficient high-quality wireless IP in a heterogeneous multi-radio environment to deliver in-vehicle multimedia services.
To achieve these objectives the DRIVE project addresses the convergence of cellular and broadcast networksbby tackling two key issues:
1. The optimised inter-working of different radio systems (GSM, GPRS, UMTS, DAB, DVB-T) in a common dynamically allocated frequency range.
2. The enhanced co-operation between network elements and applications in an adaptive manner.

Work description:
To achieve these challenging objectives DRiVE is devided into four workpackages consisting of several tasks. Workpackage and task leaders have been appointed to ensure that the objectives will be met.

WP1 (dynamic radio aspects): develops methods for dynamic frequency allocation and for co-existence of different radio technologies (GSM, GPRS, UMTS, DAB, DVB-T) in one frequency band to increase the total spectrum efficiency and reach.

WP2 (IP-infrastructure): realises an IP-based mobile infrastructure the ensures the optimised inter-working of cellular and broadcast networks. The Ip-infrastructure will provide support for asymmetric communication, for uni-multi- and broadcast, for quality of service and for continuaous service in case of hand-over.

WP3 services, implementation and trials): develops adaptive services for a multi-radio vehicular environment, integrates the key concepts of DRiVE developed in WP1&2 to demonstrate them and validate the benefits by user trials and field tests.

WP4 (project management and dissemination): manages the project and co-ordinates the dissemination of the results , e.g. contribution to standardization activities.

Milestones:
The DRiVE project will result in:
- Specifications for spectrum-efficient co-operation of cellular and broadcast networks in a common dynamically allocated frequency range
- IP-based mobile infrastructure for optimised inter-working of radio networks providing in-vehicular multimedia services.
- Adaptive services for a multi-radio vehicular environment
- Demonstrator showing DRiVE key concepts (Y02M12)
- Contributions to standardisation bodies (ETSI, IETF, ITU)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
