Advanced Insulin Infusion using a Control Loop

Objetivo

The project aims at a fundamental improvement of treatment of people with diabetes.

The development will concentrate on 3 major components in order to simulate a healthy pancreas in a closed loop mode:
An insulin in furor where parameters are continuously adapted;
.A continuous glycaemia measuring device;
.A model of the human physiology in order to compute the infusion rate as a function of glycaemia and time.

The project shall deliver all medical and technical aspects needed in order to proceed toward an industrial application within the 3 to 5 years following the completion of the project. Therefore it will focus on improvements of glucose sensor technologies, modelling of glucose metabolism and system development to approach the functionality of an artificial pancreas.

Objectives:
The goal of the project is the set-up and test of a controlled personal insulin dosing system that makes use of the latest bio-sensor technology, advanced software simulation tools and new micro-dosing tools to greatly improve the personal medication of persons suffering from diabetes.

One objective is to measure over a long period continuously and reliably the glucose level to improve substantially treatment of insulin dependent diabetes. Better adjustment of insulin dosage reduces significantly diabetes-related complications like eye, kidney and nerve damage.

Additionally, automated data recording will produce much better data that will be used by research institutions for better models and improved statistical evaluations of diabetes and diabetes treatment. Statistical evaluation and actual glycaemia values will also be visible to the patients allowing them for the first time continuous feedback and monitoring of the trends of their health conditions in time.

Work description:
The project shall deliver all medical, technical and market aspects needed in order to proceed toward an industrial application within the 3 to 5 years following the completion of the project.

Preparatory phase:
.check the feasibility of the above architecture and recognise possible "roadblocks";
.assess the basic requirements for system design;
.real needs of the diabetics;
.needs of the diabetes-care personnel;
.expectations for the device's man-machine interface (MMI);
.expectation for the body interface;
.clarification of the medical indications.

Industrial research in order to obtain a continuous and automated measurement of glycaemia, including calibration, tests and data conversion facilities.
Create a physiological model or an advisory system, which allows determining the parameters settings of an insulin pump. Since both the glucose sensor and the physiological model are of primary importance for the project and bear very the high risk of development, two groups shall work in parallel on each area.
Create a first set of prototype of a workable device, which shall in addition contain an insulin pump, an MMI allowing the patient to control its device, and the necessary links for a monitoring by a medical doctor or a nurse. A number of testing and the gathering of experimental data shall be performed in order to assess a system with real chances to be developed to a commercial product.

Tests shall be basically done in two steps:
"in vitro" by modelling and measuring in a laboratory;
."in-vivo", whenever all foreseeable system errors have been eliminated and when the proof is made, that any potential danger of injury to the test person has been eliminated.

Finally the project shall look forward to the way the results may be used to proceed to the development of products, and to fulfil the following goals:
.to increase the quality of the patient's life;
.to decrease the overall costs due to the treatment of diabetes.

Therefore a strategy for industrialisation and a strategy for market introduction shall be elaborated within the project.

Milestones:
The project shall deliver all medical and technical aspects needed in order to proceed toward an industrial application within the 3 to 5 years following the completion of the project.
Therefore it will focus on improvements of glucose sensor technologies, modelling of glucose metabolism and system development to approach the functionality of an artificial pancreas.
Important milestones will be the decisions on the sensors and models finally used in the complete system.
