Objective
Modern ships become more complex. They operate in more congested waters, with higher speeds and more strict requirements to timeliness and cost of operation. The regulatory impact on ship operations is also dramatically changing. New resolutions or directives that come into force (MARPOL, HAZMAT, ISM, etc), imposing additional load on personnel.
ITEA-DS aims to develop an intelligent ship control and monitoring system that can enhance safety of ships and lower operational costs. This platform will be based on standards and wherever is needed proposals for amendments or new standards will be made. Additional R&D work aims to demonstrate distribution of conventional high level functionality (e.g. maintenance and configuration) to low level instrumentation with the help of new WWW type technology (e.g. Java and XML).
The project is organised into five main sequential stages.
1.Assessment of user requirements and state of the art
2. System design
3. Prototype implementation
4. Verification & testing
5. Field trials & Demonstration
Objectives:
ITEA-DS project will develop and verify a set of systems and tools for situation assessment (with focus to emergencies & environmental impact monitoring) and decision support (with focus to predictive/ conditional maintenance). These include an instrumentation system that allows ship wide access to any type of data from sensors, actuators and any other intelligent control and monitoring device, and a general-purpose workstation for human-machine interactions. Further it includes a series of fully integrated higher level tools for automation sub-systems evaluation, ship maintenance and emergency management.
Work description:
The tools under development within ITEA-DS Platform are:
The Ship Area Intelligent Data in Automation (SAIDA), an instrumentation system (for sensors, actuators and any other intelligent control and monitoring device) that allows ship wide access to any type of data in the device;
the G-HMI, a general purpose workstation for human-machine interactions;
a Distributed Intelligent Evaluation and Maintenance System (DIMES), introducing a new concept for "intelligent" sensors used in completely integrated automation/control system configurations;
a real time Interactive Emergency Management System (ISEMS) that makes use of SAIDA in assessing situations such as heavy weather (low passenger comfort, danger to ship or to cargo), fire, smoke and high temperatures, as well as grounding, rest-stability and evacuation; a high-level decision support tool for situation assessment (SHIDES-SA) to provide for adaptive information filtering and control;
and an Adaptive ISM based Assistant (AISMA) to support shipboard users according to their roles and the context of ship status.
The tools will be verified with the aid of simulation techniques during an extensive validation phase and tested in a real environment on a fast ferry vessel. Project plan secures user participation, through a series of work-shops, the widest possible dissemination of results and active contributions to the standardisation activities for ISC systems.
Milestones:
The project plan foresees the development of key exploitable H/W and S/W subsystems and an integrated platform able to assembly the ITEA-DS subsystems and new ones.
Specific deliverables will include reports on Assessment of user requirements and state of the art;
System design (Definition of system specification, system architecture, functional specification in line with the captured requirements);
Prototype implementation;
System testing and Demonstration.
