Personalised Retrieval and Indexing of Media Assets in Virtual Environments for Real-time Access

Objetivo

The project PRIMAVERA aims at building a Content Management System for broadcast applications that allows for an intuitive, visual-aided annotation and retrieval of media information and provides a personalized view on the archive content as well as a personalized filtering of incoming information. Advanced analysis and indexing functionality for video as well as for audio content are the fundamental building blocks for new techniques that support efficient querying and searching in the media repository, and exploration of the archive content. A central focus of the project is put on the usability in a production environment, by integration of high-performance indexing and retrieval techniques that fit well for large-scale broadcast archives into an already existing Content Management System, forming the basis of the PRIMAVERA system. OBJECTIVES
The project PRIMAVERA aims at building a Content Management System for broadcast applications and is based on audio / video processing, information retrieval, and distributed systems technology. The project aims at extending the functionalities of an existing system in the directions suggested by extensive user evaluation of the available systems. The resulting system should provide friendly information environment and support for large-scale, distributed broadcast archives.

The following set of specific objectives characterize the PRIMAVERA system:
1. Flexible and easy to update system architecture;
2. Intuitive, visual-aided, personalized media information environment;
3. Advanced analysis and indexing functionality for video and audio;
4. High-performance indexing and retrieval for large-scale broadcast archives;
5. Capability of querying, searching, and browsing the media repository.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The workplan of the PRIMAVERA project has been structured into eight work packages, reflecting the overall goals and functionalities of the final prototype system:
- Project Management;
- Dissemination of results, concertation with other projects, and standardization;
- Exploitation of the project results;
- General system design, specification of the interfaces, and system integration;
- Advanced Indexing and Retrieval Techniques;
- Profile Generation and Management;
- User Interfaces and Visual Interaction Paradigms;
- User Tests and Analysis.

In the project startup phase, the user requirements, test user groups, and content areas for testing the prototype system will be defined. Afterwards, a complete Content Management System and all interfaces between the different system components will be specified. The goal is to provide an integrated, fully operable system with a special focus on the requirements and recommendations of end users. The development of an efficient image / video retrieval system for distributed databases and user- and query-adaptive image comparison strategies will be carried out. Also, structures and access methods for storage of user information profile data and the provision of visual interfaces for definition and result presentation of user profiles are implemented. Advanced visualization techniques for the graphical user interface presentation include the dynamic VRML presentation of image database content and 3D presentation, interactive exploration as well as analysis functionality for audio/visual material. The PRIMAVERA system will then be installed at a major European broadcaster for test and analysis with real users. The technical and usability aspects of the project results will be evaluated and a constant feedback to technology developers during re-design of the final prototype will be established.
1. The User Requirement Document has been developed and covers the requirements for European SMEs in the development of common products and services.
2. A Document describing the 3D Model for Digital Design and Development of Tourism Products and Services
3. An OBPM, which provides information and guidance to support standardisation of the relevant processes in small companies
4. A 3D Software System fully tested, and validated
5. Demonstration, project presentation & workshop and dissemination reports
