COMPASS is a server application providing image indexing and retrieval services based on automatic description of image visual features such as color, texture, and luminance. The client application can then feed to the server a query formulated by sample images, representing both wanted and unwanted images, and obtain from the server the most similar images stored in the database.
One of the most salient features of the system is its efficiency: a new database with one million images can be created within a couple of hours and the time needed to search for a single image in such a database is just a few tenth of a second.
