Controlled Authoring and Translation over the Internet

Objectif

The project adapts existing and accepted language technologies in the aeronautic and automotive sectors in order to introduce them in other industrial sectors. The dissemination of these technologies will be substantially improved through the application of an Application Server Provider model on existing language technologies: SME?s will no longer be excluded from using these technologies due to high acquisition costs. SME?s can thus be suppliers of high quality components with high quality manuals. Secondly, the project introduces a new translation paradigm where the industrialization of the translation business is a goal on itself. Overall results will be enhanced effectiveness and better efficiency. The project includes framework definition and collection of data to assess improvement gains. OBJECTIVES
1. ASP based: the technology platform and architecture will be adapted to be able to propose controlled editing and automated translation services using an application service provider model (web-based). This shift reduces significantly the barrier for utilization and makes the technology feasible for SMEs;
2. In other sectors than aeronautics: three technical sectors have been chosen to demonstrate the benefits of the technology: vending machine manufacturing, software manufacturing and prepress activities;
3. Setting up a framework to collect the necessary objective data to measure the gains of the technology used in the complete documentation production chain;
4. Dissemination of the technology through the economical and technical evidence collected during this project.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The project has five main components:
1. development of the ASP model, mainly by improvements to the existingarchitectures;
2. customization of the ASP software to different new technical sectors, mainly bydefining and implementing controlled terminologies for the sectors involved;
3. application of the checking and translation technology to pilot projects;
4. measurement and analysis of the improvements5. dissemination of the results.

These main components will be applied in two pilot projects with followinglimitations:
1. for each sector a maximum of two similar manuals of 150 pages each, the total number of pages amounting to 900;
2. when drafting of the original text is done in English, this drafting will be done in controlled English;
3. when drafting is done in another language than English, this original text will be translated into Controlled English. The Controlled English version will be used as the hub language for translation into other target languages4. target languages are limited to four target languages out of French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Dutch. The project is divided into two phases. The first phase should be considered as the real trial. In this phase the ASP software will be improved and customized for the different sectors, and the users will be trained. In this phase a first

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
