Lithium-Carbon-liquid electrolyte battery system for electric vehicles - car integration and demonstration

Objetivo



Objectives
The main objectives of this project are:Providing two test platforms (one electric vehicle type for road test and one for safety test) which will use the same Lithium-Ion battery system technology and standard interfaces developed in a previous contract, JOE3-CT95-0012 (Project A) :
- Minimum Vehicle range : 200 km - Vehicle top speed : > 120 km/h - Minimum vehicle range over the life time of the battery : 100 000 km
These targets refer to a standard car with an energy consumption of 130 Wh/km/t. The objectives of performances at battery system level, mainly based on the European Battery System G2 technical specification (SAVALI document ref. S0016/98 rev.3) will be the following :
- Energy density : 120 Wh/kg - Cycling life with ECE15 cycles at 80% DOD : 1000 cycles - Operating temperature : -30°C to +45°C - Battery cost (at serie level of 100 kbatteries/year) : 150 EURO/kWh - Battery life : > 6 years
Technical approach
In the preceding project entitled Lithium-Carbon Liquid Electrolyte Battery System for Electric Vehicles: Battery Module and System Development Project (Project A, 1996-1999), a standard battery module and complete battery system were developed and bench-tested, incorporating standard interfaces ( CAN communication protocol). These standards will be used to develop and manufacture customized battery systems which will be integrated into car prototypes. Each battery system will consist of :
- several standard battery modules, serial connected.

- one or several customized trays containing all the battery subsystem components and their interface with the vehicle.

- one battery ' management ' system, incorporating the can communication protocol with the vehicle.

- one thermal ' management ' system.

Within this new proposed car integration and demonstration project, the battery systems will then be integrated into 2 different European vehicles and the feasibility of Lithium-Ion technology as traction batteries for electric passenger cars demonstrated. Indeed, the results of bench tests performed in project A are not sufficient to demonstrate either the performances of the battery system in real driving conditions or the safety behaviour according to the car design. Therefore, performances and safety have to be evaluated in vehicles tested under real conditions. Expected achievements and exploitation
- 2 technical specifications for battery system introduced in each vehicle will be written, including the following items :
- thermal ' management ' system interface.

- Electronic control system interface.

- Electric interfaces (High Voltage Unit).

- Mechanical structure interface.

- Car integration of the 2 battery systems.
- Road and Safety Testing of vehicles.
