Characterization of engine exhaust particulate fingerprints and their contribution to air quality

Objetivo

Air pollution generated by fine particulates is suspected of non negligible health related effects. The development of efficient control strategies for air pollution requires to know the relative importance of the various sources which contribute to airborne particulate matter. Among these sources, motor vehicle exhaust is considered as an important contributor to urban aerosol.
Chemical mass balance (CMB) models can be used to estimate source contributions, to urban aerosol by comparing the chemical compositions of source emissions profiles with that of ambient air. Nevertheless the application of such models relies on the ability to get chemical compositions specific of each source and which are sufficiently different from one source to another.

The main objectives of this study are :

1. to determine the chemical composition of particulates emitted by various types of engines (heavy duty and light duty, diesel and gasoline).
2. to select tracers or fingerprints specific of each engine.
3. to evaluate the feasability of using much fingerprints to identify the contribution of each engine category to ambient particulates through chemical mass balance (CMB) modelling.

The research will be organised in three main phases :

Phase 1 The work will consist in the selection of the appropriate analytical techniques for the determination of reliable fingerprints for particulates emitted by various engines, including LD and HD diesel engines and LD gasoline engines. Attention will be paid to the harmonization of the operating protocols between the partners involved in this task. Sampling and collection of particulates will be optimized especially in the case of low emitting gasoline engines.
Partners 2, 3, 5 and 6 will participate to this phase.

Phase 2 The same analytical determinations will be applied to particulates collected in ambient air. The sampling technique will be also optimized. The sampling locations will be carefully selected as being mainly influenced by traffic in order to minimize the contribution of other sources for which fingerprints are not available. Monitoring campains will be conducted in 2 big cities and for 2 different sites in each city. Partners 4 and 6 will be involved in the realization of this phase.

Phase 3 This phase is strongly governed by the results of the two first phases. If fingerprints specific of each engine category have been determined and if ambient particulate fingerprints show some similarities to those of traffic sources, then it will be possible to use CMB models to identify the contribution of different engine exhausts to the air particulates for the sites studied in phase 2. Partner 4 will be in charge of this phase.
