Exploitable results

Solar irradiance on the earth's surface varies significantly over the course of a year. Even if only a small proportion of the annual electricity consumed in a region is produced from grid-connected photovoltaics (PV), fluctuations in solar irradiance strongly impacts upon the quantity and timing of electricity put onto the grid. The data pool developed during this project has enabled improved management of supply grids with a high penetration of PV generators. In summer, in the hours around noon, the solar input on the ground surface may be around 10 times greater than the annual mean. Significant fluctuations in solar irradiance occur throughout the day and year and therefore have a strong impact on the quantity of electricity produced temporarily by the modules and thus the input of electricity onto the grid from a grid-connected system. This project therefore aimed at achieving a better understanding of the time dependence of solar irradiance on the management of a supply grid at the regional and local level.
