The project aimed to design and construct a reliable, high performance photovoltaic refrigeration system well suited to the storage requirements of agricultural products, including meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, at isolated sites not supplied by traditional energy sources. The main beneficiaries of this project will therefore be small communities in remote areas in developing countries, and in tropical climates. Currently, the only products that use photovoltaic cooling techniques are simple refrigerators or freezers supplied by standard photovoltaic generators. These devices, which have limited storage volumes (maximum 300 litres), were designed for domestic applications in rural electrification programmes in developing countries, or for preserving vaccines in dispensary equipment programmes. Food preservation in photovoltaic cold storage presents a variety of technical problems. For example, batteries are a weak link in the technological chain; photovoltaic generators are costly; and the systems tend to have high electrical consumption. Electrical consumption therefore needs to be optimised in order to minimise the size and initial capital costs of the generator. As a result, the project team, consisting of partners from France, Spain, Romania and Slovenia, focused on designing a system that relied as little as possible on the batteries. The system would need to be simple and robust, with light maintenance requirements, to allow it to be used in isolated places, and adapted to specific climatic conditions.
