Exploitable results

Inefficient combustion and fouling are two major problems which reduce the energy efficiency and environmental performance of industrial processes. Models which optimise both of these factors have been developed in this project and can be applied in a wide range of process systems. Fouling results from the deposition of material on heat exchanger surfaces. It occurs from both gaseous and liquid environments in the heat transfer systems of most process and power industries and significantly reduces their efficiency. A reduction in fouling vastly improves the efficiency of energy use, with significant additional benefits from an environmental and operational perspective. The general aim of this research project was to develop a technically integrated approach to combustion and fouling modelling which may be used to help optimise both energy and environmental efficiency in process industries. The specific objective was to provide new combustion and fouling models, in combination with both industrial and laboratory measurements, for a range of industrial applications.
