Exploitable results

A prototype biomass-fired cogeneration heat and power plant was developed based on a bubbling fluidised bed combustor and a Stirling engine V-160, to provide an electrical power output of 10 kW. Although the Stirling engine and fluidised bed combustor themselves performed satisfactorily, overall performance was limited by recurrent particulate fouling in the engine heat exchanger. The project was intended to develop and demonstrate a new concept for electricity production by combustion of biomass in small-scale electricity units, typically 10- 200 kW, with high levels of conversion efficiency (up to 42%). Small co-generation plants of this type should be especially suitable for rural communities where there are local resources of biomass, so reducing the use of fossil fuels.
