Exploitable results

A complete particulate trapping system for exhaust gases from light-duty diesel engines was developed. This involved the identification and development of fuel additives, trap filtration materials and canning configurations, analysis of regeneration processes and development of regeneration controls. The whole integrated system was developed using test-bed engines. Diesel engines offer better fuel efficiency than gasoline engines. Unfortunately, they can cause air pollution by emitting particulate matter. Particulate traps represent a radical approach to face this problem. This project aimed to define and develop the concept of a particulate trap for light-duty diesel vehicles.
