Iberian Atlantic Margins

Objective

The IAM project is part of an effort to study the deep geology of Europe. In particular the project aims at exploring the nature of the deep continental and oceanic crust of the Earth in selected areas of the Atlantic margins of Iberia for a better understanding of the processes governing the formation of basins, outstanding structural features and the location of hydrocarbons and other natural resources.

The Atlantic margins of Iberia have already been the site of diverse geophysical and geological studies carried out independently or bilaterally by the countries involved in the project. A European joint effort is therefore the best way to tackle the oustanding geological problems of the area.

The experimental part of the work consists of marine seismic surveys designed to obtained a detailed image of the structures beneath the seafloor. Recording onshore has also been planned to obtain wide-angle reflection data.

The tracks of the seismic reflection lines have been carefully selected to coincide with areas where major problems can be tackled. The selected areas have, in general, been studied previously and complementary data from other geophysical techniques are already available.

The results are expected to provide key information on the processes involved in the spliting apart of the continents to form the Atlantic ocean and on formation of the basins associated with the development of the Iberian margin.

The data acquisition involves the use of a ship fully equiped to satisfy the needs of deep penetration and long offset seismic recording. A call for tenders was launched after initiation of the project in late 1992 and the acquisition scheduled for summer 1993. Further analysis and interpretation of the data will allow to have the first results during 1994.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
