Exploitable results

The Iberian Atlantic Margin (IAM) project aimed to explore the deep continental and oceanic Atlantic margins of Iberia, using marine seismic survey techniques such as reflection and refraction, to gain a better understanding of the formation and evolution of Atlantic type margins. It also aimed to highlight outstanding structural features, and reveal the potential locations of hydrocarbons and other natural resources. The Atlantic margins of the Iberian peninsula have already been the focus of diverse geophysical and geological studies by the six members of this project. Through collaboration, it was hoped that the outstanding geological problems of the area would be resolved. Without such information it would be difficult to develop and test further methods on the formation of basins in the Iberian region. The IAM database would also create a valuable benchmarking tool, enabling further scientific and technical work (either on the structure of the continental and oceanic Atlantic margins of Iberia or with investigations of the earth crust in other European regions) to be both accurately specified at the outset and compared and contrasted with the new survey material.
