Exploitable results
A computer-based decision support tool for the evaluation of biomass to energy projects was developed and tested. The software, known as BEACON, comes in the form of a user-friendly toolkit and is supported through a user club.
For biomass to be accepted within the marketplace it is necessary to have tools to demonstrate its viability and cost-effectiveness in terms comparable to those used for traditional fuels. This project aimed to develop, apply and test a new model for the quantitative description of biomass production/utilisation systems at the local and regional levels. The model combines technical, economic, environmental and other relevant parameters, and is intended for the assessment of energy from biomass projects, particularly in less developed regions of the EU.
