A design tool for wind turbine loading and fatigue

Exploitable results

A Windows-based computer code was developed as a design tool for wind turbine loading and fatigue. The tool, called "Bladed for Windows", provides a friendly and convenient user interface to an existing complex core of technical codes, and draws on the long experience of Garrad Hassan in computational and simulation codes for wind energy. "Bladed" meets the requirements of both the wind turbine manufacturing industry and standards bodies, and has the potential to become an industry standard design tool within the wind turbine sector world-wide. During the last decade the ability to predict the behaviour of wind turbines has progressed enormously, due largely to the improvement of computer models and the parallel validation of the models against measured data. For such models to be useful to wind turbine manufacturers for design purposes, they must be transformed to user-friendly computer programs capable of providing rapid and reliable design analysis. The project aimed to develop a computer code as a design tool for wind turbine loading and fatigue problems. The tool needed to meet the requirements of both the manufacturing industry and the standards bodies. It aimed to enable the user to evaluate, in a single step, the complete specification of fatigue and extreme loads experienced in a wind turbine.
