Exploitable results

Innovative technology was developed for large megawatt-scale wind turbines, specifically variable slip control and individual regulation of the turbine blades. The innovations were incorporated into a 1.5 MW wind turbine produced by Vestas A/S which now forms part of the company's range of commercial turbines. EU support was able to accelerate the technology development and so maintain Europe's lead in this high technology area. Vestas, the world's largest wind turbine manufacturer, recognised that there is a large market for MW-sized wind turbines in Europe, the USA and in other markets. With this in mind, Vestas planned the development of the V55, a 1 MW wind turbine having three blades and a diameter of 55 m. The project supported some aspects of technology development for this new range of wind turbines, in particular novel features such as variable slip and individual regulation of the blades.
