Exploitable results

Hybrid energy systems combine renewable energies such as wind and photovoltaic (PV) with diesel generators and battery storage to provide reliable electricity generation for remote areas. By constructing a simulator of such a hybrid system and measuring its long-term behaviour under different conditions, it is possible to identify opportunities for increasing efficiency and improving the design of hybrid systems in the future. The test facility constructed during this project is unique in Europe. Both a software and a hardware simulator have been developed for long-term analysis of hybrid system behaviour. The tests identified opportunities for fuel savings and optimizing the design of the system by using different configurations and control strategies. The efficiency of the system varied considerably depending on the configuration and the control strategy used. This indicates that it is essential to understand the interactions between the generators used and the load distribution to achieve maximum efficiencies in hybrid systems.
