Heat-controlled operation of a 200 KW phosphoric acid fuel cell using natural gas with varying properties

The project aimed to examine the heat-controlled operation of a 200 kW phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC), as a combined heat and power plant, using natural gas with varying properties. The main objective was to develop standard strategies and sensors. These are necessary for testing the heat-controlled operation of the PAFC and to investigate the plants dynamic behaviour, which is important for grid-independent and grid operation. Fuel cells are efficient and clean electricity generators based on electrochemical processes. Of the various types of fuel cell currently under development, PAFCs are the only types of fuel cell to be effectively commercialised. The project was an important step in the route to developing PAFC as a commercially-viable power generation source.
