Exploitable results

The project aimed to carry out optimisation studies on integrated fuel cell energy systems. Research would focus on four types of fuel cells, with findings compared to conventional energy conversion modes, such as reciprocating engines for transport applications and combined cycle gas turbines for electricity generation. The overall objective was to evaluate the energy efficiency of integrated systems and their emission of pollutants. To enable meaningful comparisons to be drawn between fuel cells as energy converters and conventional energy conversion modes, it is necessary to examine the whole life cycle of an integrated energy system. Only then do the finer characteristic features of such systems emerge. Since it is these factors that determine the overall efficiency of such systems, it is crucial to undertake fundamental research into the dynamics of such systems. The research investigated integrated energy systems with fuel cells as the major energy conversion device, including the necessary sub-systems as reformers and heat recovery steam generator systems.
