Combustion chambers and high temperature filters in industrial plant are prone to fouling, which significantly reduces their operating efficiency. This project has provided methods which increase understanding of these fouling mechanisms and thus contribute to an improved design of these facilities throughout process industries. Process industries are now starting to demand better energy efficiency and environmental control for their operations. A better understanding of all thermal processes is therefore required in order to optimise both energy utilisation and environmental emissions. This work extends the results of earlier JOULE projects on the fouling of heat transfer surfaces (JOUE-CT90-40 and JOUE-CT90-0070) and combustion in furnaces (JOUE-CT90-0051) to combustion chambers and high temperature filters. Similar fouling processes are active in all high temperature regimes effect the energy efficiency of the process. In furnaces, the fouling mechanism produces deposits on the walls which reduce heat transfer and for high temperature filters fouling is the phenomena which determines how effectively the filter functions and how rapidly it becomes clogged. The objective of this project was to increase understanding of these mechanisms by developing methods capable of predicting high temperature fouling in these systems.
