Developing cost effective industrial processing techniques for thin-film silicon solar cells is an important objective of the photovoltaic industry as technology costs are currently too high to encourage the widespread application of this technology. The investigation carried out during this project into silicon crystalline solar cells has concluded that these have the potential to benefit from cost effective industrial processing techniques. This will enable the cost of this technology to be reduced, contributing significantly to meeting the industry's objective. The aim of the project was the investigation of silicon crystalline thin film solar cells. It aimed at producing the first prototypes of these cells, which have the potential to result in future cost-effective industrial processing techniques. Different alternatives have been investigated, and processed at the laboratory scale. The methods applied have included high temperature deposition on low-cost silicon substrates and low temperature deposition on glass or ceramic substrates. For each of these techniques a reliable estimation of the possible large-scale production costs has also been provided.
