The project investigated flame structures and propagation, which arise from partial pre-mixing of fuel and air, such as occur prior to auto-ignition in a diesel engine. Concepts for partially pre-mixed turbulent combustion were developed, together with a database (triple flamelet library) of basic flame structures, including data on ignition, flame propagation, pollutant formation and reduced kinetic mechanisms for multi-component model fuels. Undertaken in collaboration with the IDEA EFFECT programme on diesel engines, the project has made significant contributions to understanding the com-bustion process in diesel engines. In diesel engines, fuel is injected into hot air and self-ignited without any air/fuel pre-mixing. Combustion in diesel engines is particularly complicated as it occurs under turbulent and non-premixed conditions. The propagation of flames in such an environment can be modelled using the "triple flame" concept where it is assumed that the flame structure propagates following a surface stoichiometric mixture. The project aimed to investigate elementary flame structures for partially pre-mixed combustion from basic principles and to integrate the results into a flamelet library for turbulent combustion.
