Exploitable results

SODAR is a remote acoustic sensing technique which has been used for over 20years. Currently, one of its main applications is for the monitoring and assessmentof the dispersion conditions of atmospheric pollutants. It was recently thoughtthat this technique could be usefully applied in the wind energy sector, to carryout wind speed profile and turbulence measurements necessary for the appropriatesiting and effective operation of wind turbines. As SODAR is a mobile system itsuse offered significant cost savings over conventional techniques using highmeteorological masts. This project, SOSOWEC (SODAR for the Siting and Operationof Wind Energy Converters) was aimed at demonstrating the suitability of thistechnique for the measurement and monitoring of wind conditions, and theintroduction of this technique to the wind energy sector.
