Study of eucalyptus processing for its utilisation as solid wood

Objetivo

The general objective of this project is to improve the technological valorisation of blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus) and red river gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis). The project will investigate in the different phases of the mechanical transformation process the specific technical problems inherent to these species (growth stresses, dimensional stability, natural durability and gluing quality), that have limited the use of this readily available raw material by the European woodworking industries.

The specific goals of the project will be to assess, technically and economically, the production of plywood, window frames, doors, floors and laminated elements from eucalyptus timber.

The general objective of this project is the technological valorisation of the blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus, Labi ll) and red river gum (Eucalyptus cama ldulensis Dehn.) by means of the study of all phases steps of the industrial transformation (felling/classification, sawing/peeling, drying, resawing, gluing/jointing, surface working, finishing, and so on). In practice it is expected to give the industry a good raw material and the technology best adapted to their transformation.
This specie has potentialities to substitute some tropical species imported by the EC countries. Some studies already taken confirm the technicians, general opinion that with appropriate technological operations it is possible to reduce or eliminate the defects attributed to this specie (growth tensions, drying difficulty, colapse, internal shakes, warping). According to the later forestal registers, Portugal and Spain together have more than 800000 ha of "eucalyptus (globulus and camaldulensis)". The utilisation of the "eucalyptus" as solid wood doesn't seem to compete with the cellulose industry, since it would consume logs with diameters not usable in the wood pulp industry.
On the other hand, the great availability and the quick renovation of this raw material, will allow to reduce in a considerable way, the imports of some species to tough hardwoods, nowaday imported from tropical countries.
