Chemical, biological and ecological studies of bioactive marine natural products of the Mediterranean benthos in view of their production

Objective

Marine organisms are able to biosynthesize original molecules without equivalent in terrestrial sources. The main objective of this project is to discover bioactive substances from
marine organisms of the Mediterranean benthos and to
understand the mechanisms that regulate their biosynthesis.

Bioassays will include pharmaceutical ones, especially
antibiotic, anticancer, antiviral, enzymatic inhibitors, as
well as bioassays in marine models: evaluation of antifouling, antilarval activities, and antibiotic bioassays directed
against ichtyopathogenic strains. The use of bioassays in the exploration of marine organisms is generally conducted taking into account either the pharmacological activity or the
ecological one. In this project we intend to use the two
approaches in order to gain an understanding of the
biosynthesis of the compounds and of the conditions under
which both biosynthesis and the release of the compounds
occur, i.e. stress, pollution, presence of symbionts or
predators, etc.

This project should lead to better knowledge and
non-destructive exploitation of marine organisms. Results
obtained in this project will have to be developed in genetic engineering projects. We expect that bioactive substances will have wide application, especially in medicine, aquaculture,
and antifouling.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
