Objective
Knowledge of the sea as an acoustic channel is essential in
order to design future communication links for AUV technology. Channel modelling is a powerful tool in our understanding of the inter-relationships between physical and acoustic
parameters which influence the propagation of acoustic signals underwater. However, in order to gain confidence in
propagation models they require to be verified by reliable
test data. This is the central theme of the EEVMAC project.
Experiments will be carried out in three representative areas. Firstly shallow water (10-40 m), short to medium range (0.1-5 km), in the Firth of Forth, North Sea waters; secondly, deeper water (50-200 m), medium range (1-10 km), in Loch Ness; and
thirdly, medium range (1-10 km), 50-100 m depth, in the
Mediterranean, in the Gulf of Lions. Measurements will be made around 800 Hz and also in the range 20-80 kHz, and relevant
oceanographic and other physical parameters will be logged
simultaneously.
Low to medium frequency results are expected to be of value in the validation of normal mode, parabolic, ray tracing, and
other channel models, and results for shallow water channels of large range-to-depth ratio are expected to be of particular value for the design of high data rate AUV systems. Edited
samples of the raw data will be logged with the British
Oceanographic Data Centre.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
