Objective
THE NEAR-VERTICAL ACOUSTIC COMMUNICATION LINK IS OF GREAT PRACTICAL IMPORTANCE IN OCEANOGRAPHY AND MARINE ENGINEERING. IT PROVIDES THE MOST DIRECT WAY OF TRANSMITTING DATA FROM OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTRUMENTATION,WELL-HEAD EQUIPMENT AND ROV TELEMETRY SYSTEMS. THE VERTICAL LINK CAN BE RELATIVELY FREE FROM MULTIPATH INTERFERENCE BUT IS CONTAMINATED BY SURFACE NOISE. ALTHOUGH THE APPLICANTS HAVE CONSIDERABLE EXPERIENCE IN THE ENGINEERING OF SUCH LINKS, MANY QUESTIONS STILL NEED TO BE ANSWERED. MOST PARTICULARLY, AN APPRECIATION IS REQUIRED OF THE BALANCE BETWEEN THE ENERGY BUDGET OF A SEA-FLOOR EQUIPMENT AND THE PROPORTION OF UNCORRUPTED DATA WORDS PASSING THROUGH THE LINK, UNDER A RANGE 0F ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS.
THIS RESEARCH IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE: NEAR VERTICAL ACOUSTIC TRANSMISSION FOR ALL OCEAN DEPTHS, INTEGRATED RADIO RETRANSMISSION CAPABILITY; APPROPRIATE DEPLOYMENT AND DATA RETRIEVAL TECHNOLOGY INCLUDING THE USE OF LOW-COST SONOBUOY TECHNIQUES; ULTRA-HIGH DATA RATES STEMMING FROM OCTAVE-BAND TRANSDUCER CAPABILITY; FIXED AND MOBILE PLATFORM CAPABILITY; DUPLEX TRANSMISSION FOR ADAPTIVE CONTROL OF THE TRANSMITTER, OPTIMAL ENERGY UTILISATION. SPECIFIC DELIVERABLES WILL INCLUDE: DEMONSTRATOR EQUIPMENTS; EXHAUSTIVE LINK TESTS; DATA ON NEAR-SURFACE NOISE; THEORETICAL PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
