Chromium-speciation in water and welding dust

Objective

The different toxicity and bioavailability of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) are a public health concern and therefore require strict control. Trivalent chromium is found to be essential for man whereas Cr(VI) is a potent carcinogenic agent for the respiratory tract requiring continuous monitoring of occupational air. Hence monitoring of the separate species in e.g. drinking water, occupational exposure or environmental samples is necessary. Determination of the total Cr content does not provide sufficient information about possible health hazards. The present state of the art of Cr speciation leaves much to be desired and compels to improve quality assessment. In order to meet the requirements of the Directives, the reliability of the methods needs to be improved substantially. Appropriate reference materials certified for Cr(III) and Cr(VI) are necessary to provide both an effective and economical way for the laboratories to check and improve their performance.

The project aimed to evaluate the state-of-the-art of Cr speciation through an interlaboratory study involving around 20 European laboratories and to produce Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) representative of drinking water and welding dust collected on filter monitors.
The interlaboratory study has been successfully conducted in 1994. The certification campaign of CRM 544 (lyophilised solution) and CRM 545 (welding dust loaded on filter) was concluded in 1995 and the reports were approved in 1996. Both materials are available at the IRMM (Reports EUR 17605 EN, 1997, and EUR 18026 EN, 1998).
The programme involved the following steps: (1) interlaboratory study using a limited batch of reference materials, (2) preparation of a large batch of lyophilised solutions containing Cr(III) and Cr(VI) and of filters loaded with welding dust, (3) certification analyses by the participating laboratories, and (4) technical and statistical evaluation of the resulyts.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
