General Information PCBs constitute a large problem in European environmental management. PCBs have been included in the black list of EC-directive 76/464/EEC owing to the quantities used and discharged, their toxicological and accumulation properties and their persistence. For environmental management, PCBs are frequently determined in fresh water sediments. Comparison of the degree of PCB-contamination between different countries is virtually impossible owing to interlaboratory differences. Evaluation in interlaboratory studies on PCB determinations in sediments reveal that systematic deviations form an important source of incomparability. ACHIEVEMENTS : The material has been prepared, stabilized and packed in 4,400 bottles. The packed material has been tested over a period of 12 months and found to be stable at -20oC, +20oC and +40oC. The packed material was tested for homogeneity at a 500 mg sample intake level; it was found homogeneous both within and between the bottles. The certification was performed by 17 laboratories, using gas chromatography with electron capture detection and mass selective detection. The material (CRM 536) is now commercially available
