PILOT IMPLEMENTATION OF A FIBRE OPTICS METHANE DETECTION SYSTEM FOR OFFSHORE PLATFORMS

Objetivo

The aim of the project is to demonstrate by a field trial that a new gas detection technology which has been developed within the promoter's laboratories achieves better performance levels than the ones presently attainable. The gas detection system, composed of a central instrument installed in a control room and a series (3 in this demo) of detection cells had to be operated on an Agip platform in the Adriatic sea. This was considered essential since the final goal of this work is the commercial exploitation of this technology. Possible customers consider a field test as essential. This project was crucial to convince the potential future manufacturer to invest in this young technology. The preliminary work necessary to perform the installation on a working platform also had the goal of producing engineering documentation to be used in the industrial exploitation.L%
The main results are :
- the positive assessment of the suitability of this technology for the offshore gas detection task
- the availability of an engineered pre-commercial prototype
- information necessary for setting up a commercial version.
The project was carried out by Tecsa in association with VUMAN Ltd. (venture company of the Manchester University) and by the engineering firm Snamprogetti Ltd (Basingstoke, UK). The national Italian oil company Agip SpA cooperated as an associate partner.
Gas detection technology was traditionally based on catalytic type detectors which proved to be inadequate for the safe operation of offshore rigs and only recently a few new developments have resulted in commercial systems characterised by a suitable performance (open path and point detectors based on IR absorption).
The technology at the base of the project comes from merging the experimental experience and the specific background that Vuman and Tecsa have as a result of former developments in this area.
The first phase of the project included the preparation of the executive design of the prototype to be demonstrated and the planning of the test installation. The issues related to installation engineering, compliance with offshore safety codes etc. were taken care of by Snamprogetti Ltd. Phase two was devoted to construction of the instrument (Vuman for the laser, optical and detection parts and Tecsa for electronics, field cells structures and software). In phase three the system was installed on one Agip platform close to Ravenna (I) and its performance was monitored for seven months. Phase four was devoted to the evaluation of system performance, to reporting and to information dissemination activities.
