Novel method for the extraction of lycopene fom tomatoes, tomato-related products and tomato-waste

Objetivo

Limonene is a carotene with proven health benefits, such as a decreased risk of cardiovascular diseases and it is therefore expected that limonene will soon be in great demand as a new food additive (nutraceutical) to improve the quality of life. The main source of limonene is tomatoes or rather the waste from the tomato processing industry, which is abundantly available. However the currently available extraction technology is based on the use of hazardous, highly flammable solvents requiring very restrictive safety measures so that it has become almost impossible to set up any new, large scale extraction facility in the EU. Consequently the tomato processing industry is very keen to be able to exploit the anticipated large demand for limonene, by using another safer and more environmentally friendly processing technology. It is believed that the proposed new technology will be not only be absolutely safe, non hazardous and environmentally friendly, but also much more effective.
