Aquaporin blockers for novel skin care products and diuretics

Objective

Disturbances of body water balance severely affect the quality of life and can lead to life-threatening conditions. Aqua Orin (AQP) water channels play central roles in human water balance and are novel targets for pharmacological intervention. To screen for blockers (aqua plugs) of Asps, mammalian and yeast cell systems will be established. Inhibitors of aqua Orin function will be identified in compound libraries and rationally designed. The activity, specificity and toxicity profile of these aqua plugs will be determined in optimised cell- and integrated, systems. The atomic structures of Asps and AQP-aqua plug complexes will be elucidated and used to design optimised aqua Orin inhibitors. Studies will be performed to further determine the role of Asps in organ water balance in health and disease to identify additional conditions where Asps are targets for pharmaceutical application of aqua plugs. Identified aqua plugs with promising profiles will serve as lead structures for the development and exploitation of specific aqua Orin inhibitors in novel skin care products and diuretics.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
