Air pollution and inflammatory response in myocardial infraction survivors : gene-environment-interactions in high-risk group

Objetivo

The aim of the proposed study is to determine the association between ambient air pollution and inflammatory responses as markers of early biological effects and to address the individual susceptibility in myocardial infarction survivors. 1200 patients will be repeatedly examined in six European cities (Athens, Augsburg, Barcelona, Helsinki, Rome, Stockholm) within an 8-month period. Ultrafine particle measurements will be conducted and traditional air pollution concentrations will be obtained from the local air hygiene networks. Inflammatory markers and single nucleotide polymorphisrns will be determined in a core laboratories. The data will be analyses with time-series methods. Gene-environment interactions will be analysed for subgroups as mandated by the epidemiological design. The results are relevant for European initiatives to implement targeted prevention strategies on air pollution and to release evidence based guidelines for high-risk populations.
