Objective
To provide architecture, applications, AIP technologies and recommendations for intelligent decision support for service management focusing on implementation options for higher value communications management functions.
The subsidiary objectives in support of the above are:
- Requirements specification and architecture definition for decision support applications in communications management.
- Evaluation of decision support technology and tool kits relevant to service management applications.
- Selection and development of a demonstrator decision support tool kit environment.
- Requirements capture, design and prototyping of realistic decision support applications for service providers.
The main objectives of the research are to provide architecture, applications advanced information processing (AIP) technologies and recommendations for intelligent decision support for service management. The focus is on implementation options for higher value communications management functions.
The subsidiary objectives in support of the above are:
requirements specification and architecture definition for decision support applications in communications management;
evaluation of decision support technology and tool kits applicable to service management applications;
selection and development of a demonstrator decision support tool kit environment;
requirements capture, design and prototyping for realistic decision support applications for service providers.
The technical approach is to develop an architecture, to create and prototype solution scenarios and apply an evaluation methodology.
It has been confirmed that the application of decision support system (DSS) techniques is a key element in making service provisioning more efficient. The understanding and the modelling of the service provisioning process has been advanced.
Three substantial DSS demonstrators have been built which are targeted to support the key steps of services provisioning: the customer requirements capture DSS; the generation and selection of alternative configurations DSS; the resource scheduling DSS.
The experience gained in developing the DSS demonstrators enabled the development of a DSS toolkit demonstrator.
Intensive effort has been placed on packaging and disseminating the results in order to facilitate exploitation.
Technical Approach
The technical approach is to develop an architecture, to create and prototype solution scenarios and apply an evaluation methodology.
The development work is characterised by the definition of a set of successively more detailed designs over a two phase prototyping cycle. Phase I prototypes demonstrated the use of various decision support technologies in aiding the service provisioning process. Phase II prototypes improve and extend these results. Architectural and systems design work continued during this period, influencing the design approaches taken. During the recommendation period, the project has drawn conclusions from the results of prototyping and prepared them for exploitation.
Key Issues
- Definition of an architecture for decision support systems.
- Characterisation of the key technical variables which impact decisions in the area of service provisioning in a multiple service and network environment.
- Relevant technology transfer from the domains of problem solving techniques and the mathematical methods of operations research.
- Requirements for the application of decision support tools.
Expected Impact
Service management operations support will be the subject of much research and development in the coming decade and the work in DESSERT will make a valuable contribution to such endeavours.
